Take Home a Cut Bouquet!

Our fresh flowers from Hawaii take pride of place at Island Home and Garden, and we encourage our customers to consider a cut bouquet to take home and place in a vase of their choosing. All of the stems and foliage are sold by the stem, and can be purchased in any combination – Barb and Robyn will happily wrap them to make them look even more appealing! They make wonderful gifts, and a stem of tuberose (when in season) or a stargazer lily adds a unique fragrance.  Going to a lunch date, or finishing errands? We will put the stems in water tubes to ensure their longevity! Some of the individual blooms (and their prices) are shown below: Heliconia – the ‘giant’ of our tropicals, it comes in many different colors and has a very thick stem -$15 each Ginger – very tall bloom, in pink or red – $5 each Bird of Paradise – always a favorite, in bright orange – $5 each Anthirrium – we get a beautiful selection every week, and they are SO long lasting – $3 (small) to $5-7 (large) Orchids – these colorful stems come from Hawaii and Thailand – $5-8 per stem Share...

Honor Your Loved Ones with Tropical Flowers

Recently, we were asked to provide a large tropical arrangement for a memorial service.  We have done this on previous occasions also, but as Robyn delivered them to the church last week, she realized how stately the flowers appeared in a spiritual setting.  There were many birds of paradise, ginger, heleconia and orchids which stood so tall in a large glass vase. The tropical colors were very vibrant under the spotlights in the church, and as the mourners passed by, the flowers caught their attention and contributed to the honoring of the deceased.  Because the stems of the ginger and birds of paradise, in particular, are so long when cut in Hilo, we recommend them for any occasion to make a significant and eye-catching creation. Our Tropical Flowers

Because of the graduation season, we have been talking about the orchids we bring in from Thailand and Hawaii to make leis.  In our weekly shipments from Hawaii, we also order a wonderful selection of tropical flowers, some of which you can see in the pictures on the Flower Arrangements page.  Island Home and Garden is the only store in Santa Cruz with such a wide variety of these flowers, and their main asset is that they are very long lasting.  The anthuriums in particular, can last up to 3 weeks, and they come in all sizes and colors. Another notable feature of the tropical flowers are the intense colors: reds, pinks, greens, purples, and oranges – which make lively and memorable flower arrangements.  Come in to Island Home and Garden and browse our “island” of fresh flowers, which displays ginger, halekonia, birds of paradise, tropic fleur, etc., and a wonderful selection of tropical foliage.   Share...

Graduation Leis – Hawaiian & Thai Orchids...

It is almost the end of May, and graduations have begun!  Our special orchid refrigerator is stocked with both Thai and Hawaiian orchids so that we can provide the custom leis that you have come to expect. Some information about our orchids: The Thai orchids are larger than the Hawaiian orchids, and most of you will be familiar with the purple and white standard leis that you buy at most places.  This Thai orchid is called Bombay (and we have another deep purple called Red Bull) which we use as base colors when making multi-colored leis.   Our refrigerator also holds ‘mokara’ orchids from Thailand in shades of orange, yellow, pink and red.  These are smaller orchids, and we use them as accent colors with the purples. The Hawaiian orchids are more delicate, but still make beautiful leis. They are all dendrobium orchids and come in shades of lavender, green, white and dark purple. Don’t forget we can also add plumeria (yellow) or tuberose (white) blooms to add a fabulous tropical scent to your lei!!!   Share...
