Welcome to our new Summer Intern!

My name is Vainui. I’m from Tahiti, and I study in a business school there.  I’m here in Santa Cruz for a 2 months’ internship at Island Home and Garden that I was able to obtain thanks to Amy Culver, who’s my mom’s friend. I arrived at Island Home and Garden in the middle of the graduation week (which is one of the busiest weeks of the year) but it wasn’t a big deal for me because I know how to make leis, both crown or haku, because I used to dance in a Tahitian dance group, where we have to make our whole costumes with flowers, leaves, seashells, and other natural materials. So during this busy week I made a special lei that a customer ordered for his daughter, and a crown for a lady. I’m very glad that I could be of help. For now, my main goal for this internship is to make contact with some Tahitian companies so that I could import products to make a Tahitian corner in the Island Home and Garden store. So be ready, the Tahitian corner is coming soon, and I know you will like it! Share...

Summer is here!

First of all, a very big Thank You from Barb and Robyn for all of the support we received during the graduation season.  We made many leis for many graduates, and appreciated immensely all of the referrals from friends and customers, and our colleagues in the Santa Cruz floral community. After taking a deep breath and returning our store to normal, we decorated the “Woodies on the Wharf” event for its annual celebration.  There were two large displays of our tropical flowers, and we took along lots of palm trees to give the entertainment area an island feel.  The wharf had the look of another era with all of the beautiful cars (Barb’s included), and we are grateful to be a part of this big city event. We made many new friends during the last month and would love to see you again and have you browse Island Home and Garden at your leisure.  We are stocking up on gifts for summer parties, weddings etc., and will always have fresh flowers coming in weekly from the tropics. The ‘Scent’ of the Islands – Tuberose & Plumeria...

For those of you who have travelled to Hawaii, one of the lingering memories is the beautiful perfume that surrounds you as you step off the plane… At Island Home and Garden, we are able to match this with first of all, our locally grown Tuberose which is in season from May through October.  The tall slender stalks are capped with white flowers which open over a week, and reveal their own distinctive perfume.  We can use a few blooms in a lei, and a few stalks are enough to infuse a whole house! This year we have been lucky enough to ship in yellow Plumeria blooms, and we are threading them amongst orchids to give our custom leis a burst of color and aroma.  The blooms are a wonderful addition to our already extensive array of colored orchids, and the scent will carry you back to your last island vacation!   Share...
